Hypersomnia is one of the most frequent symptoms of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. In persons who experienced sexual abuse, an escape into the world of dream gives relief.
Persons suffering from trauma sleep for more than half of the day. It is a time of remaining in one place, stagnation and complete powerlessness. In my degree piece, I make use of starched sheets, which “remember” the shape of a human figure sleeping under them.
Starch gave me a chance to materialise the state of “my” hypersomnia. And materialisation opened room for a conversation – a conversation without which most victims of sexual violence have to cope. Creating a taboo, blaming, stigmatisation… This is only a small part of the reasons for which we decide to keep silent. I have decided to stop it, break the silence and start a dialogue. To put an end to my Hypersomnia.
I want to show that this problem affects many of us. However, being afraid to speak, we close up in our small worlds without even realising that someone else – maybe even our loved one – may experience the same.
