The body is deeply ambivalent as a place of both physiological and cultural exchange. It is an object of fascination and rejection, desire and disgust. It is a source of pleasure and pain. The body is affected equally by tenderness and care on the one hand and violence and terror on the other hand. Marking a physical and sensual border between what is inside and outside us, the skin is never an ultimate border, because the body is an object where the border is constantly crossed by touch, particularly the one that results from contact with another body.
