The subject of the degree piece was a mural – Stilt walkers by Linas Domarackas – located on the wall of the tenement house in the Praga Północ district of Warsaw.
During the course of my studies, I dealt mainly with historical objects. However, the master’s degree piece gave me an opportunity to explore the topic of street art and find out how broad this field is.
When I started the practical part, a number of questions appeared: can street art be an object of interest for a conservator of monuments? Is it necessary to conserve murals, or perhaps there are other solutions?
The main assumption for the conservation of the object was to stop destructive processes and restore its aesthetic and social functions. I observed the relationship between the poor conservation status of murals and inadequate technology. I think that the conservator could co-operate with artists at the design stage in order to jointly develop the best technology.
