For me, what matters most in art is the mere selection of material and the semantic load that it involves. When I choose it, I make sure to get to know its nature, historical context, and the expressiveness it stands for.
The urge to create the degree piece was the mysticism of fire and the related rituals, which are the models laying the groundwork for each of its parts. In this way, the degree piece and minor degree pieces touch upon universal meanings, whose sources go back to the origins of civilisation. As they oscillate between the sacred and the profane, they focus on the symbolism, which is emphasised by the austere aesthetics. “Vertical” refers to the idea of the orientation of churches and is arranged along the east-west axis. It balances between those two directions and constantly returns to the designated point, for a split second marking the zenith. The illusion of perfection and completion is transient, it comes and goes, appears and disappears.
