Currently, we are faced increasingly often with the issue of dilapidated ancient sacred buildings in need of repair. In Poland, using churches for other purposes is still controversial. To address this, I propose creating a new temple of art within the ruins of the old cathedral, and in this way preserving the non-ordinary character of its former function and responding to current problems and needs.
The monumental parish church in Gubin, a rebuilt town, with a few traces of ancient times, has become the perfect object for my studies and creating my idea. My reinterpretation of the cathedral and the surrounding yard is the result of a long-lasting search and reflection on the dialogue and relationship between the past and the present. It is a juxtaposition of the historical church and the form of ruins with a modern form of architecture. It was born out of my fascination with the poetics of ruins and the Gothic cathedral, which – though deprived of its function – remains transcendental and ready to assume its new role.
